My experience with the podcast on a whole was positive. I’m an opinionated person and tend to think my way is the right way for good reason. Doing this project with my friends and peers was interesting. As the saying goes “show me your friends ill show you who you are” The lads were just as opinionated and like minded as myself so there was some conflictions throughout the podcast. Discrepancies that we were mature enough to work through and resolve as a group. Our research phase I found very constructive and informative with 4 brains delving into the Dubai design scene we were regurgitating obscure facts on our research areas. It opened my eyes to the vast expanse that spans the design world. My focus point being the annual design week held in the design district.
Dubai’s design week is a pro leading trade fair design for high quality original design in middle east it offers programes and initiatives for students graduates and professors to work across a multitude of institutions and countries to tackle real world problems. It also has exhibit of the best projects from students in top design schools around the world.
The recording process was also new to me not having dabbled in the likes since my Transition Year days. The mixture of opinions and the stubborn attitude of all present led to seem interesting debates and discussions. The actual physical Recording was also difficult we tried to create a conversational style with fluid flow while still getting our points across. There was some outtakes and many a repeated recording.
Reflecting now I obviously see how we could improve by coming together more to familiarize ourselves with sound editing and removing background noise that’s definitely one aspect we fell short on with Peadair taking the brunt of that workload. Id also like to commend Dylan with his photo with editing skills our cover image combining our faces with the sky swept skyline of Dubai around us. We could always have been more organised as well trying to come together and set times to work were often difficult too pin down with our workload increasing by the week. We also devoted a chunk of time to time management we realized rapidly ten minutes isn’t that long of a time especially considering we were trying to display the depth of our research in a few minutes with often interesting topics only being brushed off.
To conclude it was an educational experience especially considering the lack of discussion time this year while we were given ample opportunity to discuss in lectures. I was never largely motivated due to the online aspect. I consider myself more of an in person learner and to put it simply found it very hard to be doing such a practical hands on course online. I really feel like ive lost beneficial studio hours with my peers. I feel the product design course flourishes when you have the aspect of group discussion allowing the convergence of a multitude of view points and opinions . the project of the podcast brought me back to good days in first year studio, a taste of days to hopefully come sooner rather than later.
