The aspect covered of our 6th week class was that of Design, Design Futures and Speculation *The thin line between Art and Design. A game to begin the class was
The Polak Game (or ‘Where do you stand’)…. A quartered Graff to designate where you stand on life and how you think it will progress.
Attached below is a rough version.
Where do you stand? Id have to consider myself to be currently standing bottom right with the stance Given to us in our version” Lower Right: Things are getting worse generally; BUT I can act to make a difference here and now, in this place. It may not change the futures, but it is still worthwhile.
I’m a firm believer in nothing being a lost cause there’s always hope to think otherwise would be to admit to defeat and commit to the void. What’s the point in the ideology of things getting worse and there being no hope? while I can understand how someone of weaker mind might be swayed to this standpoint. I could never find myself there. In relation to the world around us not even on the standpoint of design were surrounded by miraculous rapidly expanding avenues of design that has the potential to propel us to prosperity, yet the world seems to deteriorate more towards chaos by the day.
I tend not to think as nihilistic and one aspect to ponder on would be the fact that with the creation of these new creation do we in fact not create more problems with each development?
A notorious development in human history would be the dive into fossil fuel usage, while it allowed and fuelled massive development in the design field and society between transport and industries. Who knows where we would be without such a development? While this is a positive, we also introduced ourselves to a negative. An incredibly destructive negative at that. With global warming worsening by the year and with it the destruction of vital ecosystems. With icecaps melting and sea level rising. Nothing in this life is free and all things come at a cost, and at what cost have we abused the resources of the planet? Well have to wait and see OR as I believe we can actively work together on a global scale to find a solution to issues such as this, while I may not be able to fix everything myself as long as I’m actively working towards better that’s fine by me. I can make a difference here and now and while it may not shape the future its still worthwhile,
Another point id love to continue to talk about covered in the pdf of reading material is
“Don’t just imagine the car of the future imagine the traffic Jam” and another aspect of social media developing and the positives and negatives.
