What makes me a product designer? Now that is a good one I’m going to need some personal reflection here. I’ve always considered a creative person.
Recognise problems in life and how they
A way of helping people and yourself. Which expands to the whole world and potential design solutions to not only problems but systems or ways of life as a whole?
Let’s take a look together at what product design is in itself and ill try and articulate my personal
What exactly is product design?
Product design describes the process of imagining, creating, and iterating products that solve users' problems or address specific needs in each market. The key to successful product design is an understanding of the end-user customer, the person for whom the product is being created.
After my final year of secondary school, I found myself lacking in direction with a plethora of paths to choose from I did not want to make a mistake of rushing into anything, so I worked a full time in a selection of fields with thoughts on what to do knocking about the head constantly. Throughout this gap year I encountered many problems in products and systems, problems which (excuse the arrogance) I felt I could fix to make better.
This mindset coupled with a talent of working with my hands led me to the realm of design, product design to be precise.
One page from our pdf files from week 1 Contemporary Design Culture module that really stuck with me was the why? Slide when considering product design.
Why
Create a stir. Make your mark. Leave a legacy. Dare to be different. Take risks. Fail. Succeed Challenge, Confront, Argue, Disrupt, Subvert, Break the rules, Cause anarchy. Be Deliberate. Speak up. Move Fast. Find your voice. Break through the chaos.
Now to to get back to the point of what makes ME a product designer, to juxtapose the afore highlighted terms with another aspect of what we crossed in class is design more Art or Engineering.
On the matter of myself id consider myself 65/35 in favour of art , I’ve never been an artistic talent and neither excel in mechanics of engineering , however my artistic element is ever expanding and most of my ideas while not fantastical can be based firmly in the real world.
I believe my pursuance of product design can propel me from obscurity allow me to make my mark and break through the chaos of the world we live in..
That’s what makes me a product designer my desire to be different to recognise problems and find solutions, to contribute something before I go.
